Just4kicks Youth 5v5 Soccer League
Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from other Youth Soccer Leagues?
The J4k League is 5 v. 5 with a reduced size field. 4 field players and one goalie. This is a recreational league aimed to introduce and develop players of all ability.

Why 5 v. 5?

The benefits of Small-Sided Soccer are widely recognized as more and more soccer organizations internationally adopt it. Small-Sided Soccer is played with fewer players on the field than traditional formats. There is tremendous benefits from 5 v. 5 soccer including:

  • With less players on the field, each child has more opportunities to touch the ball, using and improving their soccer skills.

  • With less players on the field, "bunchball" is much less likely to form. The platform for optimal learning and fun is created through the 5 v. 5 format.

  • All players have the role of offense and defense. No more standing back waiting for the ball. All players have a much higher scoring opportunity and exposure to true soccer.

How does Just4kicks play a role in the league?
Just4kicks plays a key role in organizing teams and schedule. Most importantly we make sure to create an environment enjoyable to all. Our goal is to develop and build soccer IQ and skill. The referees are Just4Kicks trained coaches who will play a key role during games to make sure the players understand each call and have an opportunity to learn from the match experience. The J4k Referee's role is to maintain the fun optimum environment for learning and development. They are great with kids and parents.

What is the game format?
Each game will consist of two twenty minute halves. However, prior to game the J4kicks Ref/coach will take 12-15 minutes to warm up both teams and introduce a new basic skill as well as a Fair Play rule.

How many weeks is the league?
The league is a total of nine weeks. First week is a player orientation and skill intro class. After the first week we begin the 8 week league.

How do I register my child or find a team?
Participants register individually. After the registration deadline we put your child on a team. During Orientation day we may change the teams for evenness in skill level. After the orientation day you will know what team he/she is on.

Is there Practice?
Because of the game and the reduced size team format each child will get a lot more touches and exposure to soccer during match play. There are no practices. We do offer a developmental 6-week clinic in Winter to prepare for the league. Click on your city for details.

How many kids are there on a team?
Each team will consist of no more than 7-8 per team. The 5v5 format will allow your child to touch the ball 60% more than traditional league play. On game day Substitutions will be made by either a volunteer parent who helps manage subs or The J4kicks Referee who will make sure all have even playing time.

Why is the league not offered for kids younger than seven?
Our philosophy is that children 3-6 y/o should focus on skill development, soccer IQ, and just having fun. Competition should be secondary. That is why we offer our developmental program for kids aged 3-6 y/o. At age 7 is when they should have a solid foundation of the soccer and are emotionally ready to compete in a recreational league.

What are the age groups and is it coed? What if I feel my child should play up or down?
We have three age groups. 7-8, 9-10, & 11-12 boys and girls divisions. If we don't get enough of one gender we will offer to combine into the other gender division. Our goal is to keep the league small enough to allow kids to play up for skill reasons only. If we feel your child can develop better in an older division or younger division we may recommend the change.

Do we get Uniforms?
All participants will be required to purchase a City of Vacaville Youth Sports Jersey. It is reversible and you can use it for other team sports during the year. Your child may already have one.

What other Gear is required?
Shin guards covered with long soccer socks (long socks will be provided on orientation day depending on team color) and shorts or sweats. Soccer cleats with molded studs only. No baseball or football cleats allowed. Please visit our Soccer Gear Page for details on requirements for all participants.
